Renovate and Downsize: A Great Way to Prioritize
Renovations can feel like a complete takeover of your space. Often it involves packing up the items in the space being renovated (and sometimes surrounding areas) and coming up with a contingency plan until the work is done. While this can be stressful, it can also be a great time to take stock of what you really need and use.
For example, when re-doing a kitchen, it is common to set up a temporary space with a few dishes and small cooking appliances. Essentially these are the essentials. When the work is done move these basics back into the kitchen and then only unpack additional items as you use them.
After a set amount of time, I recommend two months, take a look at what you haven’t unpacked. If it is the Nesco that you know you use twice a year, maybe it gets a save. On the other hand, if you used to use it twice a year and now realize it’s been a few years since you’ve brought ithe Nesco out, it might be a good time to pass it on to someone who’s hosting alarge group soon. The rest of the items need an honest look: that cute avocado slicer, the containers with missing lids, something you saw on an infomercial in the 80’s that is still in the box. Many of these items can go. You can try selling some items online or feel good giving or donating these things to someone that will use them.
No renovations in sight, not to worry. You can still box items up and do this same activity. It is a great way to raise awareness of what you really use and free up space for you newly organized space. Happy renovating!
